A) LET US START WITH THIS COACH :
This is an ICF rake coach which has a full form of - Integral Coach Factory , which is located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu- Chennai. This coach factory was established 68 years ago from today in 1952 in Chennai. This factory is known to manufacture the famous and most common type of coaches used in Indian Railways , which are ICF rake coaches.
This factory was the first Indian rail coach factory to produce coaches for use in India. Before this Indian Railways , which was controlled , owned and operated by British Government imported the rail coaches from England via sea transport for use in India , same was for the import of railway locomotives !! Some of those coaches can even be seen today as well in the National Rail Museum located at Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. From the year of establishment till today it has created over 60,000 railway coaches which has made this factory the world's largest rail coach factory !!!
Earlier in 19's the coaches which were made here were of red color and mixed of wood , but after some time it started to create the legendary blue colored ICF coaches , which are commonly seen today .
Not only coaches , this factory also manufactures some LHB coaches , Local train coaches and some training coaches. This factory is the only one where the ICF coaches are made .
You must have heard about the Train 18 or Vande Bharat Express , even this train was also made here at a cost of 100 crore rupees !!
This factory also manufactures the ICF Rajdhani , Garibrath and Duronto coaches .
Apart from this here are some pros and cons of the ICF rake coaches :
PROSPECTS OF ICF COACHES ---
1) THESE COACHES ARE CHEAPER THAN THE LHB COACHES.
2) THESE COACHES CAN EASILY BE COUPLED WITH ANY TYPE OF COACH ( EXCEPT LHB)
3) THESE COACHES USE BELT DRIVE ALTERNATORS TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY , HENCE NO POWER CAR REQUIRED.
BUT, THERE ARE MORE COSEQUENCES OF THESE COACHES ---
1) WHEN THERE IS AN ACCIDENT THESE COACHES CLIMB-UPON EACH OTHER , HENCE MULTIPLYING THE NUBER OF CASULITIES IN ACCIDENTS.
2) THERE IS A SPEED RESTRICTION OF THESE COACHES TO ONLY 110km/hr , HENCE TRAIN CANNOT MOVE WITH GOOD SPEED.
3) THESE COACHES REQUIRE COONSTANT MAINTAINENCE WHICH IS VERY EXPENSIVE.
4) THESE COACHES ARE MADE UP OF IRON , WHICH MAKES THEM HEAVIER THAN OTHE COACHES.
5) THESE COACHES HAVE SPRING TYPE SUSPENSION SYSTEM WHICH MAKE THE JOURNEY A LITTLE " JERKY " AT HIGHER SPEEDS.
NOW , LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS MORDERN LHB COACHES :
This is a modern LHB rake coaches which are now-a-days used in our premium trains like - Shatabdi , Rajdhani, Duronto , Humsafar , Double Decker and the Tejas Express Trains. The first train in India to get these LHB coaches was The New Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani Express in the December month of the year 2003.
From then these coaches changed the Indian Railways into Modern Era of trains because the coaches were a lot better than the conventional ICF rake coaches which from Safety to Performance.
The full form of LHB is ( Linke Hoffmann Busche ) , these coaches were firstly imported from one of the most discipline country of world- Germany. Later the Indian Railway started to produce is own LHB coaches.
Earlier they were of only A/C class , but later they started to build LHB coaches of Sleeper and General classes.
These coaches are produced in different coach factories located in different parts of India , some of which are listed below :
1) Modern Coach Factory - Rae Bariely ( Uttar Pradesh )
2) Rail coach Factory - Kapurthala ( Punjab )
3) Integral Coach Factory- Chennai ( Tamil Nadu )
THERE ARE A TOTAL OF 15,000 LHB RAKE COACHES WHICH ARE RUNNING IN THE NERVES OF INDIA. SOME MILESTONE OF THESE COACHES ARE :
A) THE FASTEST TRAIN OF INDIA THE GATIMAN EXPRESS IS CONSISTED OF LHB COACHES.
B) LOGEST TRAIN OF LHB COACHES IS NEW DELHI-ALLAHABAD ( NOW PRAYAGRAJ) PRAYAGRAJ EXPRESS.
3) THE FIRST SHATABDI TO RECEIVE LHB COACHES WAS NEW DELHI-LUCKNOW SHATABDI EXPRESS .

1) THESE COACHES CAN EASILY ATTAIN A SPEED OF 160km/hr , HENCE INCREASING THE SPEED OF TRAINS.
2) LHB COACHES USE BUFFER TYPE COUPLING, WHICH PREVENTS THE COACH FROM CLIMBING ON EACH OTHER DURING ACCIDENTS.
3) THESE COACHES USE VACUUM TYPE SUSPENSION SYSTEM , WHICH MAKES THE JOURNEY SMOOTH AND COMFORTABLE.
4) LHB COACHES ARE MADE OF ALUMINIUM AND IRON , WHICH MAKES THEM LIGHTER THAN ICF COACHES.
COSEQUENCES OF LHB COACHES :
1) THESE COACHES ARE VERY EXPENSIVE THAN ICF COACHES , COST OF AN AC3rd COACH IS ---- ( ICF -- 80 LAKH) / ( LHB---1.5 TO 2 CRORE ) PER COACH. THE BOIGE ( THE PART WHERE WHEELS ARE ATTACHED) IS VERY EXPENSIVE . THEY USE FIAT TYPE BOGIES.
2) THESE COACHES CAN ONLY BE COUPLED WITH LHB COACHES AND SOME ICF COACHES WITH CENTER BUFFER COUPLERS.
SO THESE WERE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ICF AND LHB COACHES.
INDIAN RILWAY HAS PLANNED TO CHANGE ALL THE ICF COACHES INTO LHB COACHES BY THE YEAR 2026 ( EARLIER DEADLINE WAS 2017 ).
